Addiction

Liz Curtis psychotherapy counseling Michigan Illinois addiction substance abuse substance use

If you found yourself here, you are ready to take the next step in discovering how substances have negatively impacted your life. You might be thinking “I need help” but don’t know where to start. The last thing you want is to be judged.

I have spent my entire career helping individuals achieve their goals in recovery. While specializing in addiction in my master’s program, I spent six months working at a substance abuse intensive outpatient program as a grad-level intern. I received my Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC) credential in 2019. I am passionate about working with adults who are ready to maintain sobriety, but know it does not have to be done alone.

My Recovery Philosophy

I believe in the 12-step model because research supports its efficacy, but your participation is not a requirement to work with me. I will never mandate meeting attendance. I may encourage you to seek community support through the peer-led group of your choosing.

I believe that harm reduction is a safe alternative when total sobriety is not achievable. Harm reduction means that you reduce the amount and frequency of substances used by any increment. I do not require total sobriety in order to work together.

I am in support of discovering what your goals are in your new relationship with substances, and redefining those goals along the way if your safety comes into question. Referral to a higher level of care may be recommended if I feel you are not able to keep yourself safe.

How Can I Help?

I offer individual outpatient psychotherapy. I am able to fulfill court-ordered therapy requirements with probation reporting. I am also able to connect you with higher levels of care if you are in need of intensive outpatient, inpatient, or detoxification. I do not personally offer groups or 12-step meetings, and I cannot be your sponsor. I am not able to offer license restoration evaluations.
